TALK | Chris Palmer "The Prints and the Paper"

EHHPS has been considering having a talk about different paper types for a while and we are delighted to welcome Chris to the Club to give his wittily titled lecture, “The Prints and the Paper”. Chris is supported by Fotospeed and Longridge.

Chris writes:

It was Ansel Adams who described a photographic negative as the score, and the print as the performance. Within this lecture I will show a wide variety of images, (mostly sourced from digital files), and discuss some of the considerations and decisions that were taken when the print was made. (The choice of print density, tonality, colour saturation, and paper surface all play an important part in the final success of a print). As a general rule I have always followed the maxim of getting the image right at the taking stage, so my aim is to produce a print that portrays the original image in the best possible way.
This is not a technical talk, but will hopefully make the audience aware of the personal approach I take both to my photography, and subsequent printing. When viewing the finished print I am guided by an underlying question...”Have I done the image justice?”

Chris Palmer:

I've been actively involved in club photography since 1979, initially as a member of Field End Photographic Society in Ruislip, Middlesex. I gained an Associateship of the RPS with traditional monochrome prints, a Fellowship with digital prints, and assess on the RPS Fine Art panel. (I also provide advice at their distinction workshops).

A busy national PAGB judge and popular lecturer, I have visited more than 225 different camera clubs, and judged many regional, national and international exhibitions.
I gained a Distinction of the PAGB with colour transparencies, and was pleased to receive an APAGB award for my services to photography. I have also had success and gained awards in international exhibitions while earning my AFIAP and EFIAP distinctions.

Now retired from working as an air traffic controller, I am a member of Amersham Photographic Society.
Since 2005 I have supported Spirit & Vision Landscape Photographic Workshops with Paul Foley FRPS.
