The Rules of the Society

Guidelines on Taste and Decency

EHHPS has a strong reputation amongst other Clubs, and Judges, as a centre of excellence for Portrait photography - so much so that we took Portraiture, in its widest sense, out of the Open section and gave it its own category.

Our work has regularly included artistic nudes and these have often scored highly, both in EHHPS and in external competitions, and have been appreciated as photographic art by our members. Long may this continue.

Unfortunately, we have occasionally seen a small but notable number of submissions of images of an overtly sexual nature, which have been queried by judges as being inappropriate for club competition, and which have at times raised complaints from members as being variously in bad taste, ‘tacky’ and degrading to women.

We have no desire to exert unnecessary censorship, or discourage the next Helmut Newton, but we must protect the reputation our Club and retain and grow our membership. It is important that you as an author consider whether your image is appropriate to the intended audience before submitting. If you have any doubts over a borderline image, then Amanda Wright, our External Competitions Secretary, is a very experienced judge, and will be happy to advise.

PAGB Guidance on AI

The PAGB have issued their guidance on AI, based on the discussion document of August 2023. The subject is covered in Issue 344 of PAGB eNews and the current guidance document is on the PAGB website

It seems likely that this guidance will be adopted by the CACC and by member clubs subject to individual committee decisions.

The basic principle the guidance seeks to fulfil, in the light of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning advances in Photography is:

“Images must be entirely the work of the Photographer. In composite images, all component images must meet this requirement. For the avoidance of doubt, use of images from any other source including, but not limited to, royalty free image banks and clipart are not permitted”.

Members are urged to familiarise themselves with the guidance.

Issue 344 also has a thought-provoking item asking the question: If you haven’t made the INPUT, can you claim the OUTPUT?
