Mike Lloyd takes Best Image award in the CACC Championship Day PDI Competition

And was was further success for EHHPS members, as Amanda Wright reports:

The first and hopefully last Zoom held Championship Day is now concluded and was slightly changed from our normal format.

The three judges were Judith Parry DPAGB AFIAP HonPAGB and Roger Parry ARPS MPAGB EFIAP HonPAGB from Mid Counties Photographic Federation of which Roger is Vice President and Tim Morland ARPS from Surrey Photographic Association.

Scoring this year was between 4 -10 (max 30) instead of 2 - 5 (max 15) and instead of our seeing every image with no critique the judges were asked to each select 15 favourite images which they could then critique on in both The Championship Day PDI Competition and The Chilterns 100 Competition.

This year 20 clubs entered 221 images from their members in The Chilterns 100 and 14 clubs each entered 15 (210) images.

In the Chilterns 100

Judith Parry gave special mention to:

  • Amur Leopard by John Alexander which scored 23 and

  • Waiting by Paul Mason which scored 27 and won a PAGB Ribbon award.

Roger Parry gave special mention to:

  • Shasta Curve by Kris Mason which scored 24

Tim Morland gave special mention to:

  • Battersea Power Station At Night by Dennis Durack which scored 23

The Bronze Medal went to Cell Count by Chris Drew from Woodley scoring 28
The Silver Medal went to At Rest by John Station also from Woodley scoring 28
The Gold Medal went to Coyote In The Snow by Julia Wainwright from Harrow scoring 29

In The Championship Day PDI Open Competition

Judith Parry gave special mention to:

  • En Pointe In Pink by Dennis Durack scoring 23

Roger Parry gave special mention to:

  • Against The Grey by Kris Mason scoring 23

Tim Morland gave special mention to:

  • Bobcat In Snow by Karina Limburg scoring 27

The overall Best Image and Winner of the Competition was Queen of Spades by our very own Mike Lloyd scoring 29 points and agreed winner by all 3 judges who each gave a thoroughly glowing critique of this outstanding image, well done Mike, very well deserved.

Rosebowl Round 3: Results and Amanda Wright's Report

It was the third and final round of the Rosebowl PDI competition last night (Monday 1st February), hosted by Pinner and against Imagez , Croxley CC and EHHPS. The round was judged by a very poorly sounding Kevin Day who nevertheless stoically soldiered on.

The evening was attended by Paul and Kris, Dennis and myself.

The recurring theme for the evening seemed to be about the difficulties of judging an open competition where you are judging wildlife against landscapes against portraits etc and I think Kevin was often conflicted, holding back an impressive 19 images out of the 60 entries. He handed out 7 20’s and 11 19’s with final scores:-

4th Croxley: 255
3rd EHHPS: 269
2nd Pinner: 270
1st Imagez: 284

The writing was on the wall as to the eventual outcome, as 11 of the 19 held back images were from Imagez. EHHPS frustratingly, narrowly missed second place by a meagre 2 points!

EHHPS top scorers for the evening with 19 were

Arctic Fox by Karina Limburg
The Bathers by Jacqui Sinnatt
(thank you newbies)

Then we had a whole raft of 18’s:

En Pointe In Pink by Dennis Durack
Duo Form by Kris Mason
Storm Dennis by Jenny Fenton
No Tissue, No Problem by Karina Limburg
Shards by Paul Mason
Bobcat In Snow by Karina Limburg
Father And Daughter by Adil Pastakia
Bee Versus Crow by Emmanuel
Waiting by Paul Mason
Looking For Artemis by Nigel Bunclark

Well done all.

We are currently in 8th position on the fixtures leaderboard and I fear this final round may well have knocked us out of the top 12 qualifying for the Final on Sunday 18th April, I’ll keep you posted.

Rosebowl Round 2: Amanda Wright's Report and Results

On Tuesday 15th December Maidenhead played host to our second round of the Rosebowl judged for us by the very popular Chris Palmer. Chris’s judging style has always been a favourite of mine as he uses a very broad vocabulary, expertly talking around a picture with its good points and failings but never in a dull or repetitive way. I know Chris’s own work is mostly natural elements and landscapes but always with a creative eye for light, form and above all composition. He often abstracts his subject so I was delighted when I discovered he was to be the judge for our forthcoming round. Having judged for all of the other clubs several times in the past I was also quietly confident that we would do well. Sadly once again though, despite all this, EHHPS were once again thwarted and beaten to third place, just.

The final score was:

1st Maidenhead 263
2nd Leighton Buzzard 239
3rd EHHPS 238
4th Northfields 227

Chris gave a wide range of scores from 14 and awarded four 20’s and three 19’s and with 52 of the 60 images scoring 17 or less, high scores seemed somewhat elusive.

Our top scorers on the night were

Karina Limburg with Arctic Fox: 20 and a Star

Paul Mason’s Rebel Rocker scored the only 18 of the night

Well done to both.

Pinner will be hosting our third and final round on Monday 1st Feb, titles and images will have to be in at least two weeks before and I need 15 images, some of those already used can be used again but if you have anything you’d like to be considered please send them off to me 1600 x 1200

We’ll be against Imagez and Croxley too.

NorthWest Fed Round A3: Amanda Wright's Report and Results

On Thursday 3rd December it was all to play for in the final round of the NWFed. EHHPS were trailing Watford by 9 points, a not impossible sum to catch up on. Sadly however, it wasn’t to be. The judge Paul Burwood had a tricky task with the quality of images presented and whilst he clarified that he would be looking for creativity, once again it was Natural History that came out on top.

Six 20’s were awarded across the whole competition, (4 were fauna, 2 were flora) unfortunately though EHHPS didn’t manage a 20 or a star in this round and only one 19 came our way. Well done Paul Mason with Waiting.

Total scores for the round were:

PRINTS

EHHPS 88
Pinner 89
Watford 93

PDI’s

EHHPS 88
Pinner 94
Watford 94

TOTALS (for this round)

3rd EHHPS 176
2nd Pinner 183
1st Watford 187

The totals then for the 3 rounds combined:

3rd Pinner 562
2nd EHHPS 570
1st Watford 590

We wish Watford well in the Semi Finals.

Across the competition EHHPS was awarded 4 stars so these images will have a second chance and compete against all the other starred images in the competition.

Storm Dennis by Jenny Fenton

XRR Visions Competition: A good night for EHHPS

Yesterday saw the final of the 2020 ‘Visions’ competition, organised by XRR, and this year taking place entirely virtually.

The competition is for both individuals (115 in total), and Clubs (in teams of three). Each author submits three images. The first two ‘Open’ rounds are pre-judged, and the third - which also acts as a tie break - is judged live on the night.

This year’s excellent judge was Richard Speirs DPAGB APAGB BPE2* There was a high standard of entry.

In the Club competition, Hertford and District CC tied with Oxford PS on 158 points, with Oxford winning on the Tie Break.

The EHHPS team of Dennis Durack, Jacqui Sinnatt and Paul Mason came a very creditable 4th equal

Club Competition

Club Competition

In the individual competition there was a tie between Robin Claydon of Hertford and District CC and Andy Sands of XRR PS with Andy Sands winning after the tie Break.

In this individual competition, EHHPS’s Emmanuel came in an excellent 6th equal.

Individual Competition

Individual Competition

High scoring images from EHHPS members were:

Dennis Durack The Eyes Have It: 20
Emmanuel Scales: 20
Jacqui Sinnatt Serendipity 19

NorthWest Fed Round A2: Amanda Wright's Report and Results

Watford hosted the second round of the NWFed last night (19 November), judged by a slightly nervous Stephen Galvin as it was his first time judging a NWFed event. He rose to the challenge well though, highlighting at the end just how tricky it is to judge a competition where all the images are specifically chosen for their technical and creative merit. He made several comments on the importance of a good title too and how it drew the viewers attention to the message the author was conveying.

It was a close run thing in the Print section and Jenny Fenton’s Storm Dennis was awarded 20 and one of the two allocated stars. Karina Limburg also scored highly with 19 for No Tissue, No Problem.

Print (PDI) Scores were

Pinner 82
EHHPS 89
Watford 92

PDI Scores were even closer with only 1 point separating us all.

Ealing was awarded two 20’s and both allocated stars this time so very well done to Kristin Mason with Statuesque and Mike Lloyd’s Queen Of Spades which was also Stephen’s image of the night!

Pinner 87
EHHPS 88
Watford 89

So totals for round 2

Pinner 169
EHHPS 177
Watford 181

The running total for the two rounds to date stands at:

Pinner 379
EHHPS 394
Watford 403

It all hinges on the final round - it's not over yet for Ealing.

Rosebowl Round 1: Amanda Wright's Report

The first round of the Rosebowl kicked off last night (Monday November 9th) for EHHPS who were drawn against Stockenchurch, Witney and Watford. Stockenchurch were originally billed as hosts but as they didn’t feel Zoom Savvy enough we offered to host the evening on their behalf .

I have to say Burgess excelled, playing role of Chairman, Webmaster, Zoom Host and even did the Vote of Thanks at the end!!! So he wore many hats and it was his first external competition but you’d never have guessed it as it all went seamlessly. The evening was well attended with approximately 34 attendees, including, from Ealing, Paul and Kris Mason, Dennis Durack, Karina Limburg, David Bowater, Jenny Fenton, Burgess and myself.

Our judge was Damon Guy who offered up plenty of advice for improvements, complimenting the good bits and scrutinising the details as you would expect. Ealing and Hampshire House I’m pleased to say did exceptionally well which surprised me as I know how good Watford are. I considered them our main competition in this round and it was a close match throughout but we won!

Ealing had five images held back and scooped the two starred images of the night. Our top scorers were

Queen Of Spades by Mike Lloyd: 20 and a Star

Bobcat In Snow by Karina Limburg: 20

Duo Form by Kris Mason: 20 and a Star

En Pointe In Pink by Dennis Durack scored 19

Battersea Power Station At Night also by Dennis Durack scored 19

The Final Score of the night was

4th Stokenchurch: 241
3rd Witney: 261
2nd Watford: 262
1st EHHPS: 269

Round 2 is on 15th December, hosted by Maidenhead and we’re also drawn against Leighton Buzzard and our close friends Northfields CC.

NorthWest Fed Round A1: Results

Amanda Wright Reports:

Last night (November 2nd) was the first of our annual external competitions with Round 1 of the North West Fed against Pinner and Watford, hosted by Pinner and judged by Kevin Day. The evening was well attended with about 46 Zoomers. Seven members of EHHPS tuned in, including Mr Binks all the way from Canada.

The competition is usually comprised of 6 prints and 6 PDI’s but this year it’s obviously all PDI’s although they are still keeping the two categories.

First up was Prints where EHHPS had two notable scores

Keep Paddling by Sally Mason scored 19
The Bathers by Jacqui Sinnatt scored 20 and was awarded one of the two allotted stars

The results at this stage were incredibly close, with just a point between us all:

Watford 107
EHHPS 108
Pinner 109

In the second half of PDI’s again we had two images to note

Arctic Fox by Karina Limburg scored 19
En Pointe In Pink by Dennis Durack scored 20

Watford came steaming through in the second half with three 20’s and both stars and the results for the PDIs were

Pinner 101
EHHPS 109
Watford 115

Total scores for the evening then were

1st Place Watford 222
2nd EHHPS 217
3rd Pinner 210

Kevin’s judging was as usual fair and considered although he did seem to be having an issue with his images looking on the cool side, several times he said the image looked too blue and neither Rick Beresford or myself could agree with him on that; strange.

Ron Wake Trophy Final: Amanda's Report

On Tuesday October 6th, Harrow hosted the Ron Wake Trophy and their first Zoom meeting. I think nerves were running high and there were a few technical glitches at the start but it all worked out eventually.

Unfortunately Northolt were unable to make an entry so we had 42 images for consideration by the judge instead of 49. The judge, Carol McNiven Young from N&E Midlands Photographic Federation held back a total of 16 images but only one of those was from EHHPS; well done Mike Lloyd with Queen of Spades.

In my view the judge’s comments were good and fair.

Two images were Highly Commended both from Watford.

In Third place was Fox Fight by Terri Adcock, also from Watford.

Second Place was Dandelion Clock with Droplets, Blue by Simon Knee from Pinner

First Place went to Ring Necked Pheasant Reflection by Ian Roberts of Harrow.

The Questors Theatre Art Quest

Although Ealing BEAT has been cancelled this year, Exhibitions Secretary Jane Arnold-Forster is pleased to announce that Questors are putting on their own Art Trail on 12th and 13th September.  External Competitions Secretary Amanda Wright already has sufficient prints for her to curate an EHHPS exhibit.

Please let Amanda know if you do not wish your work to be included.

Please let Jane know when you will be able to join the rota of EHHPS members looking after the exhibition and selling the prints.

EHHPS vs Cheltenham CC: The results are in

On Tuesday 7th July, EHHPS took on Cheltenham CC (John’s Clare’s new Club) in a friendly competition via Zoom videoconferencing. Amanda Wright reports:

Last night saw the first (hopefully of many) external photographic competitions between the 120 strong Cheltenham Camera Club and EHHPS. Organised by our own John Clare and Burgess, Cheltenham asked us if we would host on their evening as they are new to Zoom and wanted to see how it worked.

Our judge for the evening was award winning Paul Mitchell FRPS who expertly guided us through each of the 40 images with exacting critique and fair scoring throughout I thought.

We were treated to some wonderful Natural History and Landscape images from Cheltenham.

The final score was

Cheltenham 354 points

EHHPS 343 points

Cheltenham were awarded three of the four 20’s:

Long Tailed Tit With White Feather by David Adamson

European Bee-eaters Dispute by Karin Wilson

Light In The Storm by Martin Fry

EHHPS’ Top Scorers were

Sea, Sand and Shadows by John Clare (20)

Mio Fornasetti by Emmanual (19)

Fading Tulips by Amanda Wright (19)

Click on any image below for a full lightbox view.

Cheltenham were delighted as you might imagine and invited us back for another bout next year, hopefully it will be in the form of a Highcliffe style trip to the Cotswolds, Covid permitting.

Annual Awards Evening: Results and Trophies

AGM 2020: New Club Rules Adopted and New Committee voted in

The 2019-20 AGM of EHHPS took place via Zoom video conferencing on Thursday 11 June 2020

A proposal to update the Rules of the Club was passed unanimously

The current rules may be inspected here (pdf)

A new committee for 2020-2021 was elected. The significant changes are:

Burgess Taylor is our new President

In keeping with EHHPS tradition, Phil Dean, as immediate Past President, fulfils the role of Vice President

There is a vacancy for Secretary.

The remaining post holders are unchanged, and the full committee may be found here.

We very much welcome volunteers to join the Committee in order to fill the current Secretary vacancy and to help form the future of the Club.

Rosebowl Final: The Results are In

EHHPS made it to the Final of the 2019-20 CACC Rosebowl Competition, only to have the Final Day, scheduled for Sunday April 19th cancelled.

The good news however is that the final images have been judged offline by the planned judge, Jay Charnock FRPS. Oxford are this year’s winners in a tight competition.

The summary results of the final were:

Final.png

Highest scorers for EHHPS were:

Marine Marie by Shaun Hodge 20
A Brush with a Cactus by Paul Mason 20
Out of the Grey by Kristin Mason 19
Storm Dennis by Jenny Fenton 19
